Miss Morley, on the choice of production said, “I chose The Dream Collector by Fin Kennedy for its sense of movie-esque adventure, mystery and high octane action as well as its blend of physical theatre with traditional storytelling. It’s extremely ambitious which drives and motivates me as a creative, with a huge amount of projection, sound and lighting too, so it provides a whole theatre operation to pull off – both onstage and offstage!
It was important to me that I found a piece that connects universally across the lower school years, and was accessible in terms of themes and characters. Interestingly, Fin Kennedy originally collaborated with a London-based school to create the show and as a result the piece became centred around a group of school teenagers. I am fascinated by the construction of dreams, why we dream, what we dream and the psychology, science, images and stories behind them. Dreams are sensory and visceral which are strong components in the theatre experiences I create as a Director. I also wanted a play that could be adapted in parts with opportunity for moments of devising in order to challenge and stretch the Lower School Production company imaginatively and creatively.”
The Dream Collector follows a school group who are going on a Media Studies trip to an isolated country house that once belonged to Charles Somna, a movie pioneer. When they arrive, the students find out that Somna was responsible for much more than just creating movies – he invented the Somnagraph – the world’s first machine for screening your dreams. The students step through the movie screen and enter the Dreamworld to meet the Neverborn, their sinister dream double.
