Money Matters for Year 9
On Friday, Year 9 took part in a ‘Money Matters’ workshop run by Bright Futures Experience Ltd.
The aim of the workshop was to improve the students’ understanding of personal finance and how money goes round in our economy.
All of the content was taught through a series of fun activities covering the following topics and skills: APR, credit cards, store cards, small print, budgeting, negotiation, pay day loans, loan sharks, tax, and public spending.
One of the tasks involved trying to say “Budgeting is about balancing – money coming in and money going out” while balancing a £20 on their head, which proved harder than it looked!
Another task saw the teams try to make an egg catcher out of card and sellotape using as few resources as possible, but still designing a catcher that would hold the egg without it breaking when it was dropped from a height!
In the final task of the day, students had to pit their negotiation skills against the Bright Futures team and a group of teachers!
