Music Conducting Workshop for Music Scholars & A Level Students
By Dunya A and Emma S, Year 9
On the 31st of January, seven students, music scholars and A Level students, had the opportunity to attend a conducting workshop with Hilary Campbell, a professional singer and conductor.
We had been given three weeks to practise the pieces that we had chosen before the workshop. These pieces included ‘Locus Iste’ by Bruckner, ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ by Faure and ‘My Soul, There is a Country’ by Parry.
In the last workshop, we spent time improving our conducting techniques in preparation for learning the pieces as they were more advanced compared to what we were doing before. In this session, we worked with an SATB quartet made up from professional singers from the group, Blossom Street. We really enjoyed this experience of being able to conduct a professional group.
The opportunity to conduct real musicians and be advised how to conduct in a professional situation has definitely improved our skills.
