Record Numbers Attend Annual Sports Awards 2024!
Last Friday we celebrated our annual NHEHS Sports Awards with a record attendance of over 160 students from Year 7 up to Year 13!
The event kicked off with short speeches by Mr Bennett, Director of Sport and Anna W, Games Captain. Mr Bennett spoke about challenges in both sport and life in general, citing basketball legend Michael Jordan as a great example. He also talked about measuring different levels of success – what is considered a success by one person is often not the same for everyone. His message was echoed in a fun video of all the PE staff and coaches where they all tried to score a netball goal from the edge of the D, showing how success is not always guaranteed but it is fun to give new things a try, even if they are outside of our normal comfort zones! At her last Sports Awards Games Captain Anna then shared why she loves sport and how she has enjoyed sport at school.
As our special guest, we were delighted to welcome Giselle Mather, England Rugby World Cup Winner in 1994 and current Director of Rugby for Trailfinders’ Women. Giselle also spoke about success. Her key message was how little everyday habits can help build the foundation for a successful outcome. She likened it to having several pots which you ‘fill’ regularly with your time – for example, skills, resources, opportunities – and then you can pour back all of these into your ‘you’ bucket which will overflow with your consistent hard work. Her analogy applies both in life and sport and will support you over setbacks and challenges. There followed a great Q&A where we learned how Giselle took the disappointment of being left on the bench for the 1990 World Cup Final, approaching it as a learning experience, trying to soak up as much as she could from the best in the world from the sidelines, so that when her moment came, she was able to grasp it with full confidence and backing from the rest of her team.
We then enjoyed a lovely barbeque before the awards were presented, for performances in the last two terms (2023-24) for the winter sports and for the summer term of 2023 for athletics, cricket and tennis. The Team of the Year was awarded to the 2023 U13 Waterpolo team whose final took place in the summer of 2023. This year saw the introduction of a new ‘Intermediate’ category, meaning there were awards for three separate age groups – Juniors (Years 7-8), Intermediate (Years 9-10) and Senior (Years 11-13).
Thanks to all who donated prizes, there was a fantastic lucky prize draw for all who had been shortlisted for the awards. And new for 2024, was the addition of the 360 photo/video booth which proved very popular!
Well done to everyone nominated and all our award winners!
