Spanish Language Theatre & Film at NHEHS
By Mrs Schindler Smith, Head of MFL
We were delighted to recently host Onatti Productions, specialists in producing interactive Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) plays, which are performed by native actors. All students in Years 8-10 will be given the opportunity to watch a play performed in the language that they are studying, with performances in Spanish, German and French in the coming weeks.
First up was Spanish performance of “En el campamento.” Before the performance, students were introduced to a vocabulary list and part of the script during lesson time to enable them to follow the story and recognise words and phrases.
Our Spanish linguists really enjoyed the play, feeling a great sense of achievement having watched and understood a whole theatre performance in a foreign language.
Of “En el campamento,” Emmeline L in Year 9 said, ” It was really enjoyable and I had a really good laugh. The audience interaction was very good, I even gave them my shoe!”
Beatrice C also in Year 9 spoke about her enjoyment of the same play: “I found myself able to understand most of what was happening and found the Pringles crisps scene very funny. The story line was very engaging and interesting and it was nice to be able to use my Spanish skills in a different way.”
Overall it was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to enrich their knowledge and appreciation of the languages beyond the classroom and to boost their confidence in understanding the languages.
Onatti will be returning to school in April to perform “Horoskop” for our German students and “Mon père ne me comprend pas” for our French pupils in May.
If you enjoy Spanish culture, why not join us this Friday for the fourth of our Modern Foreign Languages Film Evenings when we will be showing the Spanish language film ‘El Viaje de Carol’ (Carol’s Journey). To book your ticket, please see the recent School Comms. All proceeds from our MFL Film Evenings go to the Harrow Club charity and so far we have raised over £400.
