¡Genial! Spanish Students Inspired at Cervantes Theatre Performance
By Daisy W, Year 12
Earlier this month our A Level Spanish students went to the Cervantes Theatre in London to see the theatre’s interpretation of La Casa de Bernarda Alba – “a drama of women in the villages of Spain,” a contemporary classic by Federico García Lorca.
The play was beautiful and dramatic which evoked emotions within the audience as we watched the all-female cast show the effects of love and death. The play was done in the round, where we were seated in a semi-circle surrounding the stage. This theatrical choice created a sense of intimacy as the audience was able to be fully emerged within this tragedy. After watching the drama, you are left in awe of the passion from these actors as they allow the audience to become a part of a Spanish family living in 1936 watching the drama unravel as well as the underlying bond between sisters.
This play, although in Spanish, could be enjoyed by anyone because of the incredibly expressive acting and emotions created on stage which can be translated into any language. The play was only one hour and 25 minutes long, however they still managed to capture the full passion and intensity of the tragedy and we were left feeling amazed at the beautiful piece of drama we had just watched. I would recommend the play to anyone as it truly encapsulated this phenomenal piece of drama, in a powerful and emotional way.
