Students Mentor Year 7-9s to First Lego League National Finals
By Heather M (Year 12) and Rachel A (Year 11)
The First Lego League is a robotic competition where teams from across the UK compete in a variety of different challenges. The team design a robot using a Lego Education Spike to complete a variety of tasks surrounding the year’s theme which was Super Powered. They also have to create a unique product idea to tackle a problem inspired by this theme.
This year the team designed an exercise bike that can generate electricity to power a room.
Our team, which was a mixture of students from years 7 -9, got to the UK National Finals which was held in Harrogate. We mentored the younger years to guide them through the competition after having competed ourselves for several years. We introduced them to how the competition worked and helped them learn how to program the robot.
It was a really enriching experience to impart our knowledge on the younger years. We have enjoyed having the opportunity to work with a team from a mixture of years groups. It was really nice to see all the year groups getting on and working together as one united team, working through the challenges and triumphs of the challenges together.
We have really enjoyed the experience and watching how the team has progressed in the last year and are excited to see how the team will continue to develop and grow as they move into next year’s competition.
