"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Volunteering Life-Changing Tutoring with Lumina

NHEHS partners with Lumina, an online Tutoring Programme for Children Looked After (CLA), a vulnerable group at significant educational disadvantage preventing them from fulfilling their potential.

Our staff (along with colleagues from other leading independent schools) provide subject-specific, one-to-one 40-minute tutorial sessions once a week in different subjects for children in care to help them to improve their academic attainment. It was set up by Harrow School in response to the loss of learning during the pandemic. It has since expanded to a vibrant partnership between like-minded schools such as ours who are similarly committed to improving the educational outcomes for young people facing significant barriers to progress.

Several members of staff have volunteered with Lumina and we were delighted to receive some wonderful feedback this week about the student mentored by Mrs Alonso-Ezbakh, as we were told, “J has gone up in Spanish by a whole level so is clearly making great progress!”

Mrs Alonso-Ezbakh was thrilled with the feedback and said of her student, “Tutoring J. is very rewarding. He is an engaged and committed student and it is fantastic to see that our weekly sessions are having a positive effect on his Spanish attainment.”
