Year 12 EPQ Presentation Evening
At the end of June, a record number of 45 Year 12 students spent an evening presenting their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) projects.
An EPQ is an independent research project aimed at sixth formers that involves either writing a 5,000 word essay or creating a product, and must be accompanied by research, a written report and a 30-minute presentation to be assessed by a supervisor.
Topics covered included: ‘To what extent is it possible to build a net carbon neutral. detached house house in London?’, ‘How is the archetype of the femme fatale used as a vessel for 19th and 20th century patriarchal anxieties?’ and ‘Should Humanoid Robots obtain freedom of expression and should the human rights act freedom from slavery also be directed to artificial slaves?’
EPQs are designed to develop students’ abilities to learn independently, support their plans for further study or career development, and can add considerable value to university applications.
When choosing a topic, pupils were encouraged to consider their interests, current affairs, their career or university course aspirations, or an A Level they would have liked to take but did not.
“It was a fabulous evening of presentation with some interesting and thought-provoking work,” said Mr Jiwaji, EPQ Co-ordinator.
