Year 9 History Trip to the WWI Battlefields
Last weekend our Year 9 historians enjoyed an enriching weekend to the WWI Battlefields in Belgium. Setting off from NHEHS at 5am, we arrived in Calais at lunchtime before heading straight to the Passchendaele Memorial museum for an unguided visit. Following this we then visited the Tyne Cot Cemetery, before departing to the Peace Village, where we were staying.
A visit to the Newfoundland Memorial was the first excursion for us on Saturday, closely followed by the Thiepval Memorial and interpretative centre. Up next was a visit to Lochnagar crater shortly followed by a mid-afternoon visit to the Wellington Quarry before returning to the Peace Village for supper. We then paid a visit to the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony, where Florence B and Lucy A paid their respects to the fallen, on behalf of NHEHS by hanging a Poppy Wreath on the gate.
On Sunday we set off early for Langemarck Cemetery before making a short journey to the Essex Farm Cemetery. After that, we then headed to Flanders Field Museum before crossing the Market Square at Ypres to visit the Leonidas Chocolate Shop! We then returned home to England and arrived back at NHEHS in the evening after.
