Year 9 Inspired by Tropical Modernism Exhibition at the V&A
Last week Year 9 travelled to the Victoria & Albert Museum to take in an exhibition on tropical modernism. They enjoyed an excellent film about the relationship between the AA in London and the architecture school in Accra and explored the different ways that Ghanaian architecture is able to maintain its culture.
Following a break for lunch in the glorious sunshine, where we even got to have some ice cream, students took part in a workshop on ‘design for change.’ They studied works such as Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya’s poster from the 2020 ‘I Still Believe In Our City’ project – her response to the growing racism towards Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States during Covid-19 – and which was displayed in the New York subway. We looked at examples of posters, including ones created by US-based artist Ghazal Foroutan in support of the protests and in remembrance of Mahsa Jina Amini who died in 2022, after she had been violently arrested for what was deemed inappropriate dress in Iran.
The group also discussed inclusive and exclusive design ideas, before designing their own poster campaign for a cause they cared about.
A fantastic day out!
